South African Music

So we did some in-class presentations today in music about some South African music. I'm just gonna leave these here:

My favorite of all.

Just kidding. That's the stereotypical song everyone thinks of when they think of African music. The following ones are some South African songs.

This is the Soweto Gospel Choir singing "Khumbaya". I really like this choir (as evident that there is going to be other songs by them on here)

Here's the Soweto Gospel Choir singing the South African National Anthem "Nkosi Sikeleli". The song became the National Anthem after the 1994 election (the one Nelson Mandela won that officially ended Apartheid policies). The song is a combination of 5 languages: Xhosa, Zulu, Sesotho, Afrikaans, and English. It's a song for unity and it's beautiful, all historical strife considered.

Here's a song that I found outside of class. Pretty popular, and it was an unofficial song to the FIFA World Cup in 2010 (the South Africa hosted one). So simple, but the meaning is brilliant: We're all the same, and that we all want the same thing.

Here's the song I chose (and am presenting Friday). Fantastic trumpet player who studied and played with some of the best musicians in the world. The song was #1 on the USA pop charts for almost two months.
